Whenever I have a conversation with anyone about fantasy fiction, we always end up recommending the same things. Things like The Name of the Wind by Rothfuss (The Kingkiller Chronicles), The Lies of Locke Lamora by Lynch (Gentleman Bastard series) or the Earthsea books – I’ve been revisiting these recently and books one and two are still absolutes Banger – by le Guin. Tolkien is always implied, maybe Philip Pullman and George RR Martin too, and Sapkowski is popular now too.
And that – this carousel of the same recommendations – was starting to bother me. It’s not because the books are garbage; obviously they are not. But they are known. Imagination is saturated by them. And their voices, with the exception of le Guin, are all quite similar. I realized I was a little caught up in her influence and realized I wanted something new.
