Hogwarts Legacy – the upcoming open-world role-playing game set at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry a century before the Harry Potter years – is slated for release later this year. The upcoming game’s launch details were revealed during a PlayStation State of Play livestream event on March 18th. Set in the wizarding world a century before the events of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise, Hogwarts Legacy will be released for PC, PlayStation 4 , PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X later this year.
During the PlayStation State of Play event, streamed on March 17th at 2pm PT (3:30am IST on March 18th), developers at Avalanche Software gave players a glimpse of what they can expect from Hogwarts Legacy can expect, including an introduction to the game and its many elements, from story to character creation. Last year it was announced that Hogwarts Legacy would allow transgender characters in the game. Players will be introduced to various settings and abilities from the game, including different Hogwarts locations such as dungeons and kitchens, magical creatures that travel on a broomstick, as well as new characters – such as the villainous dwarf Ranrok, the powerful Professor Figg and others.
The developers showed off the character creation aspect of the game as well as other parts of the game that will affect gameplay. These include sorting into houses, the ability to learn new skills and improve them (talent points), brewing handy potions, and growing magical plants. Players have access to various classes at Hogwarts which they will join as fifth year students. The game will also feature the well-known village of Hogsmeade, where players can buy ingredients, equipment and more.
Learning skills at Hogwarts helps a player investigate rumors of a growing goblin rebellion that threatens to compromise the school’s security. Gameplay also features sinister creatures corrupted by magic, goblins, and dark wizards. The goblins are said to have allied themselves with dark wizards, but the gameplay trailer doesn’t reveal much more. Meanwhile, the trailer shows various spells such as blasting curses, stunning spells, shield spells, and enchanted weapons. Combat needs to be tailored to the weaknesses of various enemies to be effective.
During the live stream, players were also shown the controls that could be used in the game, which was recorded on a PlayStation 5. The trailer shows the ability to befriend various characters in the game, including students who have their own stories and traits. The game will also feature the legendary Room of Requirement, allowing players to brew potions, sow and harvest crops, and upgrade gear while catching up with their classmates. The game will also feature dynamic weather, which was shown during the trailer.
The game will be released later this year during the holiday season. The popular game was first announced in September 2020 and was supposed to be released in 2021 but was pushed back to 2022. Hogwarts Legacy is not affiliated with JK Rowling, the author of the eponymous Harry Potter series, who made several comments deemed transphobic in 2020. and criticized by many, including Harry Potter film stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.
Hogwarts Legacy is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X this year.
