iPad Air (2022) launched with M1 chip, center stage support: price in India, specs

The iPad Air (2022) was unveiled at Apple’s virtual event on Tuesday (March 8) along with the highly anticipated iPhone SE (2022). The new iPad Air is powered by Apple’s M1 chip, which is also already available in the iPad Pro models and is also part of the Mac computers. In addition to the new chip, the iPad Air (2022) includes an improved front camera that supports Center Stage – the software feature that was introduced on the iPad Pro and iPad mini last year. However, the fifth generation iPad Air carries the same design introduced on its last model in 2020.

The new iPad Air is also available in 256GB Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + Cellular models, which haven’t received a price tag yet.

The iPad Air (2022) is available in blue, space grey, starlight, pink and purple colors and will be available in 29 countries, including the US, starting March 18. The new model will also be available for pre-orders in India and other markets starting Friday, March 11th. In the US, the iPad Air (2022) will debut with a starting price of $599 (about Rs. 46,100). This is identical to the last iPad Air model.

The iPad Air (2022) runs on iPadOS 15. It features the same 10.9-inch LED-backlit Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2360 x 1640 pixels introduced on the model launched in 2020. The display has a peak brightness of up to 500 nits and supports the P3 wide color gamut and true tone white balance. In addition, the display also includes an anti-reflective coating on the top. The new iPad Air also features Touch ID support built into the power/standby button. Apple has equipped the iPad Air (2022) with the octa-core M1 chip and 8 GB of RAM.

The presence of the M1 chip is said to deliver up to 60 percent faster CPU performance and 2x faster graphics performance over the previous iPad Air. The in-house chip is also equipped with Apple Neural Engine for native artificial intelligence (AI) processing.

Apple offered a 12-megapixel wide rear camera on the iPad Air (2022) along with an f/1.8 lens identical to what was available on the last model. The camera supports features such as autofocus with focus pixels, panorama (up to 63 megapixels), Smart HDR 3, photo geotagging, automatic image stabilization and burst mode. In addition, it supports 4K video recording at frame rates of 24, 25, 30 and 60 fps. The camera also supports slow motion videos for 1080p at 120 fps or 240 fps.

The new iPad Air also comes with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide front camera that supports machine learning-powered Center Stage, which can be used to customize the camera view when using apps like FaceTime. The camera is equipped with an f/2.4 lens with a field of view of 122 degrees.

The iPad Air (2022) is available with 64GB and 256GB storage options. Connectivity options include 5G (optional), Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5, GPS/A-GPS (only in cellular version) and a USB Type-C port. Onboard sensors include an ambient light sensor, a barometer, and a three-axis accelerometer.

Apple has added Apple Pencil (2nd generation) support to the new iPad Air, allowing users to draw sketches on the go. There’s also support for Magic Keyboard to provide a notebook-like computing experience by using a floating design and an integrated trackpad on the detachable keyboard.

In terms of battery life, Apple claims the iPad Air (2022) will deliver “all-day battery life.” There’s a 28.6 Wh lithium polymer battery that’s rated for up to 10 hours of web browsing or video playback over Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi + Cellular variant, on the other hand, is said to provide up to nine hours of web surfing on a single charge.

The new iPad Air’s built-in battery supports fast charging, and a 20W USB-C power adapter is included in the retail box.

The iPad Air (2022) measures 247.6 x 178.5 x 6.1 mm and weighs 461 grams (Wi-Fi only) or 462 grams (Wi-Fi + Cellular). The dimensions are notably identical to the last iPad Air model.
