iPhone supplier Foxconn to hire retired government workers in China: report

| |

Local authorities in China’s Henan province are urging retired soldiers and government employees to work at Foxconn’s Zhengzhou iPhone factory, official Shanghai Securities News reported on Tuesday.

The plant, the world’s largest iPhone manufacturing facility, has been hit by dissatisfaction with government-mandated measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, which have forced the company to isolate many workers, but many others as well in recent weeks caused to flee.

The calls to retired workers came from authorities in cities like Jiyuan and Kaifeng, who said those who accept the offer would be entitled to their current salary plus wages and bonuses from the factory, the publication said on its official WeChat Account.

For example, in Jiyuan, civil servants can get a bonus of CNY 800 (about Rs. 9,000) after registering for the job and another bonus of CNY 3,000 (about Rs. 35,000) after completing more than 30 working days factory wages and her current salary, it said, citing an unnamed younger government official.

Foxconn declined to comment on the hiring programs and also declined to give further information on the production status of the Zhengzhou plant.

Apple last week lowered its forecast for the delivery of the premium model iPhone 14 due to the situation. Reuters reported last month that Foxconn’s production of Apple’s iPhones at its Zhengzhou factory could fall by as much as 30 percent in November.

Earlier this month, Foxconn quadrupled bonuses for workers who stayed and also launched a recruitment drive, announcing higher than usual salaries.

On Tuesday, Henan Daily reported that the factory received its first new workers on November 13.

Last week, Apple supplier Foxconn said it expects smartphone revenue to fall this quarter and is adjusting production to prevent the latest COVID-19 restrictions at a giant iPhone factory in China from hurting Christmas orders.

Foxconn has been in the news in recent weeks over strict virus restrictions at its Zhengzhou plant, the world’s largest iPhone factory, halting production. The plant in China’s industrial center employs around 200,000 people.
