Pixel 6a to Pixel Watch, I/O 2022 signals Google it’s getting serious about hardware

| |

Google hosted its I/O 2022 consumer keynote this week, showcasing its new hardware developments, including the Pixel 6a and Pixel Watch, and software innovations, including an “immersive” view on Google Maps. While the launch of the Pixel 6a in India has been confirmed, the Silicon Valley giant has yet to provide details on the arrival in the country of the Pixel Watch and other products it unveiled at the keynote. It also revealed the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, as well as the Pixel Tablet, as next-gen hardware that will launch at a later date.

To talk about the best of Google I/O 2022, Orbital host Akhil Arora joins Reviews Editor Roydon Cerejo and Executive Editor Jamshed Avari on this week’s episode of the Gadgets 360 podcast.

The Pixel 6a debuted at the I/O 2022 consumer keynote with a price tag of $449 (roughly Rs.34,700). The phone is available in three different colors namely Chalk, Charcoal and Sage. It has a single variant with 6GB RAM + 128GB storage. While Google hasn’t revealed any details about the Pixel 6a’s launch in India yet, it has confirmed that the phone will make its way to India later this year. It is believed to be available through Flipkart by the end of July.

Google offered its custom Tensor SoC on the Pixel 6a – similar to last year’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The new phone also comes with a dedicated security co-processor called the Titan M1. It has two rear cameras, including a 12-megapixel primary sensor. There’s also a 4,410mAh battery with fast charge support.

The design of the Pixel 6a reminds us of the existing Pixel 6 series models.

Alongside the Pixel 6a, Google unveiled the Pixel Watch at I/O 2022 after years of anticipation and a slew of rumours. The smartwatch sports a circular, domed design and interchangeable straps. The Pixel Watch also features Fitbit integration for improved fitness tracking support. Thank goodness the Fitbit acquisition finally means something.

Google also announced the Pixel Buds Pro as next-generation True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds at the event. The earbuds come with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) support, which sets them apart from the existing Pixel Buds models. Details on the launch of the Pixel Watch and Pixel Buds Pro in India were not disclosed at the I/O 2022 keynote.

In addition, Google has also teased future hardware and presented the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro as well as the Pixel Tablet. The Pixel 7 series is due out later this year – alongside the Pixel Watch. However, the Pixel tablet is slated to launch sometime in 2023.

Google also demonstrated its new “immersive” view on Google Maps, which aims to offer users a comprehensive, digital model of the world through their mobile devices. It works on both Android and iOS hardware and uses Google Cloud to render the experience to put less strain on the device.

The new offering was initially rolled out in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo. However, there’s no word on if — or when exactly — we’ll get it in India. The track record is not good with such features.

Google also announced an expansion of the languages in its Translator app to 24 additional languages. These include other Indian languages in Assamese, Bhojpuri, Mizo and Sanskrit.

The event also gave us a sneak peek at the next-gen Google Glass, which appears to be more natural than the original Google Glass. However, exact details on when we could see the new augmented reality (AR) glasses have yet to be announced.

We talk more about the Google Glass upgrade and how well the Pixel 6a could do in the Indian market. You can listen to all of this and more by clicking the play button on the Spotify player embedded above.
