On the surface, the 2022 Laver Cup could be the battleground for Team Europe vs. Team World. But it is 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer who will steal the limelight. Last week, the veteran Swiss tennis pro confirmed that the three-day tournament marks the end of his competitive career. The 41-year-old tennis star, who has faced challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries over the past three years, has now decided to move on. “I’ve worked hard to be fully competitive again. But I also know the capacities and limits of my body,” Federer said in a voice memo.

Federer, who plays for Team Europe, will be joined by career rivals Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. A doubles match is scheduled for each day of the tournament – and on day one the Swiss legend will team up with favorite Nadal. “That we can go through a career that we both had and come out the other side and have a nice relationship is maybe great news not just for tennis but for sport and maybe even beyond,” he told The Guardian .

Captained by Swedish maestro Björn Borg, the remaining Team Europe line-up includes Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and current world No. 2 Casper Rudd – the youngest of the bunch, who hails from Norway.

Meanwhile, Team World, led by John McEnroe, is made up mostly of Americans. From the US we have Jack Sock, Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz. Then there’s Félix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, the second youngest player in the ATP top ten. Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman and Australia’s Alex de Minaur complete the list.
